ALL ABOUT REFEREES
Basic Requirements
Individuals looking to become a licensed referee through US Soccer must have the following:
- Be at least 13 years old.
- Grassroots Online Course – Online Training (Approximately 4.5 to 6 hours in length; $105) – US Soccer NCSI Background Check (18 years old or older only; $30; Good for 2 years) – Safe Sport Certification – Online Training (Approximately 2 – 2.5 hours in length; FREE)
- Introduction to Safe and Healthy Playing Environments – Online Training (1 – 2 hours in length)
- Download the IFAB – Laws Of The Game – App (You will need these on the field.) – Referee Quiz
**You can keep track of all of this through learning.ussoccer.com/referee and login to your account. It will show your progress on your DASHBOARD.
—>The New Mexico Soccer Referee Committee (SRC) will handle your assessments, mentoring, and ultimately your assignments through a state administrator. - There will also be an additional in-person classroom training session for all NEW referees to complete before they will be assigned any games.

How Do I Start The Process?
- Go to learning.ussoccer.com/referee.
- Click Sign Up in the top right-hand corner.
- Create a profile for you to be able to login to the site.
- Once complete, click on I’ve never had a referee license before.
- Check your email to verify your login.
- Go to Referee Program.
- Click on Register for a Course
- The Purpose, Criteria, Eligibility, and FAQ’s are located on this page. 9. Click on Go To Course List
- Register for the First Time Grassroots Referee Certification Course – it is available in Spanish and English
- Proceed to Register and Pay for the course. ($105)
- Keep track of your progress through your DASHBOARD.
How Much Do Refs Get Paid?
This is dependent on the level of the game and the individual league or club within the state. NMSSA is associated with adult soccer, so here are the rates for adult games.
For Grassroots Referees:
Adult Games (refs must be 13 years or older) – each league pays differently Albuquerque Soccer League:
* If you ref at least 10 Albuquerque Soccer League (ASL) games, ASL will reimburse your certification fee.
– $45 – $55 as a Center Referee (11v11 format)
– $40 as a Center Referee (7v7 format)
– $35 as an Assistant Referee (AR)

Santa Fe Adult Soccer League:
-$50 as a Center Referee (both 11v11 and 7v7 formats)
-$40 as an Assistant Referee (AR)
Gallup Adult Soccer League:
-$35 for each referee – 2 ref system (11v11 format)
-$35 for a Center Referee (7v7 format)
Mesilla Valley Soccer League:
-$40 for a Center Referee (11v11 format)
– $33 for an Assistant Referee (11v11 format)
-$37 for a Center Referee (6v6 format)
**All rates are subject to change. These rates do not apply to tournaments.
All Adult Tournaments that are run by NMSSA pay the following:
$45 for a Center Referee ($55 in Santa Fe)
$35 for an Assistant Referee ($40 in Santa Fe)
$25 for a 4th Referee
**If standby refs are required for highest level games, they will be paid $25 a game.
